Written by AMA staff (02/1990); Formatted by JS (05/2008), Updated by JS (09/2009)

Al Irwin, from Champaign, Illinois, is described as a “tireless club worker.” As an electronics engineer, Al is an invaluable asset to the Champaign County RC Club. Al headed a club project that resulted in the assembly of 22 transmitters, 33 receivers, and 150 servos. Many club members were able to get into the air because of his hard work, skills, and leadership. He has repaired radios for club members despite a heavy work schedule and other demands on his free time.

Al holds a patent on the Tach-Tron, a governor system he developed for RC Helicopters. This device was written up in RCM magazine and has since been used throughout the USA and several other countries.

With a personal computer he designed and built, Al has been responsible for club records and publishes the monthly club newsletter. Since his talents extend to being a qualified mechanic, he also maintains the club tractor.

Never one to sit on his achievements, he has served the club in every officer capacity. His club members feel Al is such a generous, skilled, unselfish person that he truly deserves the Vital People Award.
