Charlie Bauer wrote the following autobiography and submitted it to the History Project in 1996.
I began modeling in 1936 or 1937 and won my first contest in 1939 with the help of Carl Goldberg in trimming my Free Flight model. The prize was ride in a Stearman bi-plane. I was a member of the Chicago Vultures, a Free Flight and Control Line club.
c. 2011: Charlie Bauer
I flew Control Line while in the service from 1952-1954. Four of my children, who flew Stunt and Scale and were known as the Bauer Bunch, were AMA Scholarship winners. While working part time for Top Flite Models, I designed their J-3 Cub, The Elder 20 and 40 and the Hot Kanary. I also designed the P-82
for Wing Manufacturing and the Fun Fighter series for Four Pi, Inc. I was one of the first modelers to successfully fly a ducted fan Control Line model at the Nats and win
with it. I have won many trophies at the Nats in past years.
While working for Top Flite, I produced the Monokote videotapes that have taught thousands of modelers how to cover with Monokote. I have been sometimes called Mr. Monokote for these tapes and the club demonstrations given throughout the Midwest.
I was one of the first to use the electronic control boxes in Control Line scale. I have been a club officer in the Chicago Aero Angels for many years and an
AMA Vice President of District VI for the past two years.
