David E. Weiss (Bensalem, Pennsylvania) has been awarded $1,250 to help him at Penn State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. David went to high school in his home town of Bensalem, Pennsylvania, and placed 15th out of a total enrollment of 546. His GPA at graduation was 3.418. At Penn State, he plans to pursue a major in business finance.
His accomplishments in both school and aeromodeling are long and highly creditable. Listed in the National Honor Society three years and in Who’s Who Among American High School Students for two years, he also found time for many volunteer activities. Students Against Driving Drunk, Future Business Leaders of America, World Affairs Club, and many others benefited from his energy.
He took part-time work with the Tom McAn Shoe Company as a salesman, while simultaneously running his own lawn care service in the summer months. He took part in the Jeffersonian Debates, worked at Woods River Village retirement home, conducted workshops for Bucks County Intermediate Unit, and somehow found time to build and fly model aircraft. His favorite aircraft are fast aerobatic planes such as his Sig Kiwi, which has more than 1,000 flights. He likes biplanes, and has a quarter-scale Aeronca Champ, but that doesn’t prevent him from enjoying working with small stick models. He has built a dozen Radio Control planes during the past three years, treasuring them, keeping them in top condition. He belongs to the IMAA Chapter 168 and has senior pilot status in that group. He loves to talk about model aviation to any new audience. As a member of the Northeast Philadelphia Radio Control Club for the past two years, he has been encouraged in his hobby by his father (an AMA AVP) and his fellow club members.
