John L. Freundenthal, Portland, Tennessee, will use his $2,250 AMA/Charles Hampson Grant Scholarship to help with his attendance at Pensacola Christian College (in Florida). He plans a major in mechanical engineering.

He graduated from Portland High School with a cumulative, weighted GPA average of 4.830. Ranked first in his graduating class of 150 students, John was the valedictorian. During high school, he was a member of the National Beta Club, National Honor Society, National Council for the Social Studies, Portland High School Academic Team, and the Math Team. In the community, John was a volunteer worker for the Highland Rim Historical Society Craft Show and also the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital Trivia Challenge Fundraiser. He was a member of his church’s youth group, and he helped with Sunday school activities.

In the summer of 1993, John worked full-time for a local Hardee’s fast food outlet. John is a self-taught Radio Control flier. He successfully mastered a .051-powered Dynaflite Piece O’ Cake and other glider-type models before transitioning to larger ones. He admits that he sought the help of an experienced Radio Control pilot for his first four-channel trainer. In the past three years, he has built three Radio Control models from kits and one Radio Control model from scratch. Earlier, when John was making his application for the scholarship, he was then serving as a Radio Control instructor to an older high-school friend.

He likes all kinds of modeling: in the air, on the water, and on the ground and he also has interests in history, mathematics, drawing, and physics.
