Julie Abel, of Florissant, MO, is at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Bunnel, Florida, where her major is Aviation Maintenance Management. She built her first model airplane in 1973 and in time became an avid competitor.

In high school, for a science fair project, she constructed a wind tunnel and developed a full range of experiments that could be performed. After the fair was completed and Julie had won first place in her category, she was asked to donate the wind tunnel to the school lab. Julie has been an active worker at local contests and the annual AMA Nats. In community activities, she served with the Civil Air patrol, worked on the Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD) campaign, and belonged to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

A high point in her modeling career came in 1986 when she traveled to Norway as a member of the United States Control Line Scale team. She placed 10th, competing against some of the best models and best fliers in the world.
