Mark Rist, of Huntsville, Alabama, received $2000 to help with his expenses at Auburn University. Mark plans to major in aeronautical engineering.
At J.O. Johnson High School in Huntsville, Mark graduated with a 4.0 GPA. A keen musician, he played with the marching band, the concert band, the All State Red Band, and the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. Other activities included the German Club, the Math Club, and the Swim Team.
Always working, Mark delivered papers for the Huntsville Times and in 1983-1984 was selected as “Carrier of the Year,” winning a two week trip to Europe as his prize. Other special interests include bicycling, jogging and scouting.
Model aviation came into his life at age ten, starting with his father and Control Line flying, then moving on to Radio Control around 1980. As a member of the Rocket City R/C Club, he enjoyed the fun flies and other club events.
Later, as his skills improved, he entered his first Pattern contest and placed first in the beginner category. He credits his early interest in model aviation for his decision to make a career in aeronautical engineering.
