Matt Bushore of Newton, Iowa, attended Newton Senior High School, graduating with a 3.814 GPA. His planned major at the University of Iowa in Iowa City is mechanical engineering. He received $4,200 from the Grant Fund, plus $2,000 from the Toledo Weak Signals Fund. His school activities included editing the literary magazine, track, photography, physics, computer assisted design, involvement in Knowledgemasters, and Project Inspire. He is a National Merit Commended student, listed in Who’s Who of American High School Students, and a participant in the Iowa Scholar Leadership Conference.

Matt volunteered to help at the Newton Air Fair and Independence Day parades. He was an active Boy Scout, a team member of the Mountain Bike Polo team, and participated in off-road bike racing.

At home, he was a great help to his dad in the family auto repair and towing business, which he credits with teaching him many lessons – how to get along with people under difficult circumstances, how to fix and repair almost anything, two-way radio operation, and stints in the office.

In spite of many hours devoted to home, family business, and community, Matt also enjoyed model building and flying. His four Radio Control aircraft gave him hours of fun, and Control Line planes he built and flew included many ½A designs. He soloed with his Radio Control airplane in April 1989 and has flown almost every month since then, quite a record for those cold wintry days in Wisconsin.
