Richard D. Carlton of Grass Valley, CA, received $2,000 to assist in his education at the University of California at Davis. A freshman enrolled in the aeronautical engineering program, he plans to become a fighter pilot in the military after graduation. His college activities include membership in the Army ROTC program and the Aggie marching band.

Richard has been building and flying model aircraft for five years. He is a member of the Sierra Eagles Air Show Team and the Sierra Foothills RC Fliers, where he has been newsletter editor and flight instructor. He also founded his own club, the Nevada Union RC Club, for model airplane and car enthusiasts. One of his greatest accomplishments was building a TS-2A Grumman Tracker air tanker that was recognized by the California Department of Forestry. While attending Grass Valley’s Nevada Union High School, he distinguished himself as an honor student, graduating in the top 10 percent of his class with a 3.5 grade pint average (GPA.) He earned further distinction by being named to the California Scholastic Federation and winning the Golden State Exam Honors Award for excellence in geometry. He also managed to be a two-year letterman on the varsity soccer team and a member of the marching, concert, and pep bands.

Active in the community, Richard plays trumpet and baritone in his church orchestra, and is also a youth soccer instructor and 4-H member.
