Richard E. Jackson, Associate VP for South Carolina
I started modeling in the early 1950s. I first flew a radio-controlled deBolt Trainer with a Babcock radio in 1958. Between 1963 and 1967, I served in the U.S. Air Force. While in the Air Force, I flew Free Flight, Control Line, and Radio Control models. At Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, I flew my first proportional Radio Control system, a Citizenship APS system. When I was discharged from the Air Force, I moved to Charleston, South Carolina and became a founding member of the Charleston Radio Control Society (CRCS). In addition to being a member of the CRCS, I also hold a membership in other local clubs, the East Cooper Model Club, the Low Country RC Fliers Club, and the SCRAM Club.
In January of 1973, while at a South Carolina Radio Aircraft Modelers meeting in Columbia, I met the woman I would marry, Elaine. We married in May of that same year. She knew from the beginning that model airplanes were my first love. Out daughter, Sarah, was born in July of 1974, and six years later, we added a son, Jonathan, in May of 1980.
The News Group Southeast (in Charleston Depot) employs me as their Customer Service Manager. I am a member of the Exchange Club of North Charleston, where I hold the office of Secretary. I am now and have been an Associate Vice President of the AMA for 25 years. Lately, I fly mostly Radio Control, but still enjoy Control Line and Free Flight. My latest Radio Control models were an Elipstik and an electric Speed 400 aircraft.
