Robert Kern, District XI, member of the Contest Board, resides at 1906 N. Portland Blvd., Portland 11, Oregon. Bob has served as a member of the Contest Board since 1953. Interest in model airplane building and flying dates back to 1935 when he built his first simple hand-launched stick model. At the first contest he attended (1938), Jim Walker made one of his first U-Control demonstrations using a conventional Class A Free Flight design with hinged fuselage. He recalls that the meet was quite successful and Walker’s airplane created a sensation. Bob has won 14 trophies for varied events at contests and is active in most all types of model aviation. His chief interests at this time are Free Flight gas, hand-launched glider, and indoor stick.

Bob has served at one time or another as treasurer, secretary, vice president, and president of the Portland Stardusters Model Airplane Club. He directed the 1953 Stardusters’ Annual Contest and numerous other club contests. He has judged almost every event in the book.

Bob believes that unlimited horizons lay ahead for model aviation because of the enlarging air age in which we are living. It is his feeling that a hobby such as model aviation will be ever increasingly popular as long as civilization exists and that there will always be a need for model aviation for purposes of youth building as well as recreation for adults.
