Sheldon Ybanez, of Roanoke, Virginia, has been awarded $1,000 towards tuition at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University at Blacksburg, Virginia. He plans to major in electrical engineering.

His GPA was 3.898 on graduation from Patrick Henry High School, where he placed 13th in a class of 490 students. He was active in student affairs in school, serving two years on the Student Council, and he was named to the National Honor Society for two years.

He also enjoyed the Latin Club, the International Student Club, and was treasurer of the Key Club. His special interests include computers (he is a dedicated enthusiast-programmer), movies, all types of sports, and model aircraft and model cars.

As a competitor, which he really enjoys, he has flown in several major regional contests, as well as the 1985 AMA Nats in Chicopee, MA. A special need for his university career is an IBM PC computer, which will be used to support his engineering studies. His community work included the Special Olympics, McDonald House, and many Kiwanis- and Key Club-sponsored programs for the handicapped.
