Todd Scott Thomasson of Danville, Virginia, was awarded a $1,200 Sig Scholarship. A graduate of Tunstall High School in Dry Fork, Virginia, Todd is enrolled at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and plans to study aviation or turf management and landscape design.
Todd was a member of the Future Farmers of America, the Parliamentary Procedures team, Spanish Club, Beta Club, Science Club, Future Business Leaders of America, and Students Against Drunk Driving. He attended the Governor’s School, a regional school for gifted students, where he organized and performed demonstrations for an aerodynamics class. Active in his church youth group, Todd has accompanied it on several missions, worked on Christmas plays, car washes, bake sales, dinners, and stews. He has also walked in the March of Dimes Walk America and is a member of the Interact Club, a community service club that collects food for the Salvation Army and provides Christmas boxes for needy families. Todd has held several weekend and summer jobs including one at the Chatham Furniture Company, where he was employed for four years, and at two home improvement companies where he did roofing, siding, installed insulation, and framing. He has also taken care of the lawn and landscaping at his church for several years.
Todd joined AMA in 1998 and has devoted a great deal of time to his hobby. “My parents have been very supportive, but have insisted that the majority of any investment [in aeromodeling] come from me.”
An active member of the Danville Aeromodelers, he has only missed club meetings when out of town on church mission trips. He has helped organize, set up, and run several events, including the IAA Rally of Giants in 1998, 1999, and 2001. He has written articles for the local newspaper about aeromodeling, and has been featured in local news stories as well as articles in Model Airplane News and Model Aviation.
Todd has been his club’s newsletter editor for four years, and helps train student fliers. His assistance is often sought for repairing and rebuilding club members’ aircraft. He has volunteered his time and resources to maintain the flying site, host club meetings, and even provide a Christmas dinner for members and their wives.
Todd has put together many school projects and demonstrations, utilizing his aeromodeling skills to help teach geometry and technology.
Todd has built at least a dozen aircraft of various types and sports RC MODLR on his car’s vanity plate.
From AMA, good luck in your future endeavors, RC MODLR!
