David M. Heckman

David M. Heckman is from San Bruno, California. He graduated from Capuchino High School with a GPA of 3.91. He ranked fourth in a class of 219.

David was awarded a scholarship of $2,250, which will be used to assist in enrollment in the University of California at Davis. He plans a major in aeronautical engineering. During high school, he was in the Gifted and Talented Education Program and was a member of the California Scholarship Federation. David actively participated in science fairs, starting while in junior high school. He counts six grand prizes, 3 first places, and 2 second places in science fairs on the school level, county level, San Francisco Bay Area level, and on the state level. At those same events, he came away with nine special awards. On the Golden State Examination, he received honors on the 1992 biology test and on the 1993 chemistry test.

He was president of the ATOM’s Family Science Club, a group that traveled to local elementary schools to give presentations and demonstrations on basic scientific principles. David won two school letters in cross-country running and a school letter in golf. He also was a tennis player and member of the marching band.

In the community, David was a youth soccer referee. He participated in city council elections by passing out flyers for one of the candidates.

Modeling has been a large part of David’s life. In 1993, he was the secretary and newsletter editor for the Peninsula Channel Commanders (PCC). He ran the PCC club raffle for a time. Contests entered include the 1991 EBRC and PCC IMAC contest, 1992 Fresno and PCC IMAC contests, and 1993 PCC contest (in which he earned third place in Basic). He has built 11 Radio Control airplanes, 1 Radio Control helicopter, and 3 Free Flight rubber-powered models. Four of the Radio Control models were his own design that he successfully flew.

David assisted in conducting a model-building class at Oceana High School that was sponsored and presented by PCC members. He discussed Radio Control modeling on a local TV show and participated in flight demonstrations for local Boy Scout troops.
